SLEEP APNEA

Sleep apnea and snoring affect millions of people of all ages. Loud snorers may have a more serious case of blocked air passages, known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

In this condition, the airway collapses or becomes blocked during sleep. This brings on total interruption of breathing. The severity of the disease is determined by the number of breathing interruptions that last longer than 10 seconds. They may occur 30 times or more an hour. Typically, normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound.

Sleep apnea disrupts sleep when your body becomes starved for oxygen. As a result, the quality of your sleep is poor. Sleep apnea is a leading cause of excessive daytime sleepiness. The condition often goes undiagnosed as doctors can't detect the condition during routine office visits. Most people who have sleep apnea don't know they have it because it only occurs during sleep. A family member or bed partner might be the first to notice signs of sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea can contribute or lead to many other conditions, such as high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack and depression, so it is important to be diagnosed by a medical professional if you experience any sleep-related symptoms.

ORAL APPLIANCE

THERAPY

Oral appliances for sleep apnea are an effective treatment option for sleep apnea patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea or for sleep apnea patients that develop CPAP intolerance,

Oral appliance therapy is covered by most Medical Insurance plans rather than dental insurance.

After completing a simple questionaire about your sleeping habits and quality of sleep, we can determine if you are a candidate for the appliance. If oral appliance therapy is the right treament for you, we can help you determine whether your medical insurance will cover the appointments, testing, oral sleep appliance and what your payment responsibility will be.

These appliances essentially treat obstructive sleep apnea by preventing airway obstruction and by allowing the patient to breathe easily and continuously. Worn in the mouth like an orthodontic appliance during sleep, oral appliances keep the soft tissue from collapsing and interrupting normal breathing patterns.

If oral appliance therapy is the right sleep apnea treament for you, Dr.Neyer is a qualified dentist specializing in oral appliance therapy.
